International Graduate Summer School in Gender History
Naples, 23-25 June, 2020

The University of Naples Federico II and the University of Naples L?Orientale, together with the Université de Rouen Normandie, the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, the Università di Roma Tre and the Universität Wien launches an International Graduate Summer School in Gender History
on the theme Freedom(s), to be held in Naples, from June 23 to June 25, 2020.
In recent years, the category of freedom has been the object of much debate and interdisciplinary study. The International Graduate Summer School in Gender History addresses the issue of freedom(s) from a historical perspective, in order to highlight the specific gendered meaning the term freedom(s) has had for women and men across time and space.
Since Antiquity, philosophers and thinkers have tried to define the notion of freedom or free will. Roman Law stated that a free person was anyone who was not enslaved and master of himself (which excluded women and minors). And this conception persisted during the Middle Ages, when thinkers also stressed the rational capacities of human beings, but had to reconcile them with the existence of an omnipotent deity. A republican tradition based on the writings of Aristotle and Polybium, alive during the Italian Renaissance and English Civil War, stressed the identification of liberty with political participation and non-domination. The gendered dimensions of all these conceptions have scarcely been studied.
The Age of Revolution introduced forms of liberalism and definitions of citizenship that largely excluded and subjugated women, along with black people and members of the working-classes. As many scholars have pointed out, the history of women?s freedom(s) and citizenship rights hardly follows sociologist T.H. Marshall?s argument that citizens acquired rights progressively, from civil rights in the eighteenth century, to political rights in the nineteenth century, to social rights in the twentieth century. Women?s and gender history have highlighted the need to rethink the relationship between ?dependence? and ?freedom?; from a liberal perspective, i.e. from a perspective that defines freedom as the lack of constraints, this relationship is invisible. Yet, it dates back to the above-mentioned distinction between those who are masters of themselves and those who are not (women, along with slaves and minors).
Using a gender perspective, the Graduate School aims to discuss the ways in which freedom(s) were debated, redefined, experienced and practiced in different contexts and by different subjects at a local, national and transnational level, and how they changed in history, since the Middle Age and until the 21stcentury. We are particularly interested in papers that adopt a global perspective, and that address non-Western case-studies.
We invite paper proposal pertaining to three main lines of inquiry, which may also intersect:
1) How the category of freedom(s) has been defined, experienced and practiced in different contexts and moments, and how a gender perspective changes the way in which we think of freedom(s).
2) How definitions of freedom(s) have shaped ideas of citizenship, also in relation to personal dependence, and how they have intersected with categories of race, class and sexuality.
3) The different sites around which freedom(s) have been historically debated, such as the body, sexuality, work, the family, state borders, etc.
During the school, Ph.D. students will present and discuss their research with scholars of the partner universities.
We invite Ph.D. students (from the second year on) who wish to participate in the Graduate School and present their ongoing research to submit their applications by sending a brief CV (max 150 words) and a short presentation, in English, of their proposals (max 500 words) by February 29, 2020to the following email address: elisabetta.bini@unina.it.
The Scientific Committee will evaluate the proposals, and acceptance notices will be sent by March 31, 2020. Accepted papers must be sent by June 10, 2020.
The languageof the conference is English.
Keynote speakerswill be announced.
Conference presentationsshould last no longer than 20 minutes. Each presentation will be accompanied by comments from a member of the Scientific Committee.
Food and housingwill be provided by the organizer institutions. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide funds to cover travel expenses.

château qui se tiendra le 5 septembre 2020.

La richesse de l??uvre littéraire de Roger de Rabutin est désormais
établie, qu?il s?agisse de son roman, de ses Mémoires ou de ses écrits
épistolaires et poétiques ; cependant, ses réalisations figuratives, bien
qu?elles soient tout aussi raffinées, sont moins connues, même si elles ont
fait l?objet de plusieurs études.
Lors de son exil bourguignon, Bussy-Rabutin s?est attaché à la décoration
de ses châteaux, Bussy et Chazeu. Il a notamment conçu un programme
décoratif original pour orner plusieurs pièces du château de
Bussy-le-Grand. Ce décor exceptionnel par son ampleur et par ses emprunts
au genre de l?emblème suscite de nombreuses interrogations et appelle des
approfondissements.
La journée d?étude organisée par la Société des amis de Bussy-Rabutin avec
le concours du Centre Pluridisciplinaire Textes et Cultures de l?Université
de Bourgogne Franche-Comté, sera consacrée aux emblèmes du château de
Bussy-Rabutin et à leur inspiration. Elle s?inscrit dans le renouvellement
récent des études sur l?emblème qui, au-delà du livre imprimé, envisagent à
présent aussi l?influence de l?emblématique dans les arts du décor et même
dans l?ensemble de la culture visuelle à l?époque moderne.
Plusieurs pistes pourront être explorées pour enrichir la connaissance de
ce décor. Il s?agit d?abord d?approfondir son lien avec l??uvre littéraire
de Roger de Rabutin. Jeu aristocratique et jeu de l?esprit, la devise exigeait
une parfaite maîtrise des arts de la conversation et de la pointe. Dans les
maximes et les légendes piquantes qui agrémentent les portraits du château,
Bussy-Rabutin donne la preuve de son goût pour ces pratiques. Élève des
jésuites, il connaissait parfaitement les codes et le lexique de
l?emblématique. Ses liens avec les pères Rapin et Bouhours sont également
bien connus. Ce dernier a d?ailleurs évoqué dans ses *Entretiens d?Ariste
et Eugène*le corps ou le mot de plusieurs devises que l?on retrouve au
château de Bussy.
Enfin, une approche artistique est aussi particulièrement attendue. En
effet, le contexte de production de ce décor ? ou d?autres comparables ?
mérite d?être abordé. On pourra par exemple s?interroger sur les ateliers
qui ont travaillé au château, sur les techniques employées, sur les liens
entre les devises et les autres éléments du décor et plus généralement sur
l?analyse iconologique des emblèmes. Les rapprochements avec d?autres
décors français et européens demandent une attention particulière.
La journée d?étude se tiendra au château de Bussy-Rabutin le 5 septembre
2020. Les communications, d?une durée de vingt-cinq minutes, seront
publiées dans *Rabutinages*, la revue de la Société, avant le 31 décembre

C?est avec une grande tristesse que je viens d?apprendre la disparition de Jean Delumeau, le 13 janvier dernier.
Ses obsèques seront célébrées le 21 janvier à 14:30 en l'église Saint Martin de Cesson-Sévigné près de Rennes.
