Call for participation: Historical Spanish–Swedish connections

University of Gothenburg (Sweden), 10–11 May 2021

At first glance, the histories of Sweden and Spain can seem distant from each other. Nothing could be further from the truth. As research shows, the connections start early and stretch into modern times, from the Scandinavian plundering expeditions on the Spanish north coast in the eleventh century to membership in the EU. In the Middle Ages, the two countries shared the Catholic religion and Swedes went to Santiago de Compostela on pilgrimages. Either on the same side or as foes, the two powers took part in the continental struggle for military supremacy during the Early Modern period, while trade and colonial ventures brought the two countries much closer in the Eighteenth Century than previously thought, both in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and in the Caribbean. The connections continue into the modern era with Swedish volunteers in the Spanish Civil War, and the influx of Swedish tourists and property owners in Mallorca, Costa del Sol and the Canary Islands.
However, little research exists on the historical connections and relations between Spain and Sweden. Since the important anthologies in the series Spain and Sweden: Encounters throughout history, published in the early 2000s there has not been a concerted effort to further examine the historical connections. Thus, we aim to arrange an interdisciplinary workshop at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, on 10–11 May 2021.
As a first step, we want those interested in participating to email us at kenneth.nyberg@gu.se. The deadline for proposals is 15 August 2020. In your declaration of interest, include a title and a short abstract of your planned paper; about 50 words is enough. If you want to participate but not present a paper, that is also fine. Lastly, inform us if your participation is contingent on us paying for your travel and lodging.
We welcome scholars from any field working on Spanish–Swedish connections at any point in time from Classical Antiquity to the 21th Century. We welcome any topics, including but not limited to, politics, war, diplomacy, trade, industry, networks, knowledge circulation, cultural influences, and tourism. All presentations will be in English.
The organizing committee consists of Martin Almbjär (Uppsala University and Pablo de Olavide University), Francisco Cebreiro Ares (Santiago de Compostela University) and Kenneth Nyberg (University of Gothenburg). More information can be obtained via email from Kenneth Nyberg at kenneth.nyberg@gu.se.
